ICIWaRM Participates in UNESCO Center Symposium on Water Cooperation
ICIWaRM participated in the International Symposium on Water Diplomacy, held on 16-17 November in Stockholm, Sweden. The Symposium brought together researchers, diplomats, decision-makers, thought leaders and practitioners to discuss international cooperation over shared water resources and water diplomacy as an approach to conflict transformation, peacebuilding and regional security.
The Symposium was hosted by the International Centre for Water Cooperation in collaboration with the International Centre for Water Resources and Global Change, Koblenz, Germany—both UNESCO category 2 centers. ICIWaRM and a fourth UNESCO center, the Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science of Dundee, Scotland, also played key roles.
Themes of the meeting included Multi-Track Water Diplomacy, A Regional Approach to Water Diplomacy, Environmental Peacebuilding and Grassroots Diplomacy, and The Role of Women in Water Diplomacy. Ms. Maria Lantz represented the ICIWaRM Secretariat, and Dr. Aaron Wolf of ICIWaRM partner institution Oregon State University gave one of the keynote addresses.
ICIWaRM and the International Centre for Water Cooperation are currently exploring additional opportunities for future cooperation.
