International Visitor Leadership Program Sponsors UNESCO Visit to ICIWaRM
ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA – March 7, 2014. Mr. Hans Denker Thulstrup, a program specialist in natural sciences in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Beijing office, visited representatives of the International Center for Integrated Water Resources Management (ICIWaRM), under the auspices of UNESCO, in the Alexandria offices of the Institute for Water Resources (IWR) on February 28, 2014.
Mr. Thulstrup is participating in the International Visitor Leadership Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. This three-week program includes visits to various federal agencies with office calls in Washington, DC; Tucson, AZ; New Orleans, LA and Honolulu, HI.
The ICIWaRM discussions, led by ICIWaRM and IWR Director Bob Pietrowsky and team members Dr. Will Logan, Dr. Guillermo Mendoza, and Dr. Kristin Gilroy, included topic areas such as:
- Recent ICIWaRM collaborative efforts with other UNESCO Category 2 Water Centers;
- ICIWaRM’s role as secretariat for UNESCO’s program for Water and Development Information for Arid Lands (G-WADI);
- Shared vision planning work in the lower Mekong River region and the country of Mongolia; and
- Assistance through the Department of State, NASA and World Bank for improved water resources management in Chad.
Opportunities for improved collaboration between ICIWaRM and other organizations within UNESCO’s International Hydrologic Programme (IHP) and developmental assignment opportunities between the various organizations were also discussed during the visit.
