Dr. Eugene Stakhiv Participates in Tufts University 2nd Annual Water Symposium
ALEXANDRIA, VA—April 8, 2011. Dr. Eugene Stakhiv of ICIWaRM was a Keynote Speaker at the Second Annual Symposium hosted by the Water Systems, Science and Society Program at Tufts University. The Symposium took place on April 1, 2011. Dr. Stakhiv’s talk was entitled “Water Management and Climate Adaptation in 2050: Does National Security Depend on Water and Environmental Security?” It was based on a paper he wrote for an upcoming American Society of Civil Engineers publication.
Dr. Stakhiv emphasized that the water sector requires a new paradigm for technology transfer. He stated that a significant, focused effort is needed to better incorporate technology transfer opportunities in the water sector and to develop near-term climate change adaptation solutions. He explained how this effort should devise a set of planning and evaluation principles to support robust decision-making relating to climate infrastructure planning and management. These principles must specifically address climate uncertainty.

The theme of the 2011 Symposium was “Water in 2050: The Infrastructure to Get There.” It was held at the Fletcher School for Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. It addressed the role of scale in infrastructure development, aging infrastructure in the U.S., and water infrastructure needs in developing countries. The Symposium included students and faculty from Harvard University, Boston College, MIT, University of Massachusetts and Tufts, as well as practitioners and professionals from government agencies, non-profits and private firms. Over 200 people attended this year’s Symposium.
